MSI meluncurkan motherboard form factor ATX untuk processor AMD baik socket AM3 maupun socket AM3+. Dengan demikian motherboard MSI 990FXA-GD65 mendukung processor AMD Athlon™ II dan AMD Phenom™ II serta support untuk processor AMD berasitektur Bulldozer. MSI 990FXA-GD65 didesain berdasarkan Chipset AMD 9 Series, yaitu 990FX dan SB950. MSI 990FXA-GD65 dibangun mempergunakan komponen Military Class II termasuk Hi-c CAP, SFC (Super Feritte Choke) dan Solid Capasitor guna mewujudkan motherboard berkualitas, stabil dan efisien. MSI 990FXA-GD65 dibekali Auto OC Genie untuk memudahkan dalam melakukan proses overclocking. Mendukung memory DDR3 dengan kapasitas maksimum 32 GB. Tersedia 2 slot PCI Express 2.0 x16, 4 slot PCI Express 2.0 x1 yang siap mendukung teknologi AMD CrossFireX.
Chipset southbridge AMD SB950 menangani SATA III sehingga mampu melakukan transfer sampai kecepatan 6 Gbps dan juga support RAID 0, 1, 5, 10. Konektivitas canggih USB 3.0 tak lupa ditanamkan pada board MSI 990FXA-GD65 yang dikontrol oleh chip NEC D720200. Sistem audio pada MSI 990FXA-GD65 mempergunakan chip Realtek ALC892.
